Cold Casting Workshop

During this workshop, we used our hands as our objects for molding!  It was cold, squishy and required from strentgh to release ourselves from the mold but overall a great bonding experience and a ton of fun!

We started with creating the "flask" or reservoir for our hands to hold the molding material without leaks or breaking at an appropriate size. Mixing up our molding material; alginate which has a very quick pot life so everyone needed to be ready to go.  Everyone also need to apply a release agent to their hands such as cocoa butter or vaseline, the release agent can not be acidic or it will react pooling with the alginate.

Once we were locked into our flask, we waited!  Not too long, alginate sets up pretty quick.

When the alginate was firm enough, with a touch of minimal wiggling, we just pulled our hands out for release!...trying to not destroy the fragile mold.  We mixed up some Smooth-Cast 300 Series urethane plastic (http://www.reynoldsam.com/product-category/urethane-plastic/), poured it into our molds to create casts of our hands!
